What is Astigmatism?
Have you ever noticed blurry or distorted vision at all distances? You could be experiencing a very common condition known as astigmatism. At OptoDoc, we’re here to help you understand what’s happening with your eyes—and how to achieve clear, comfortable vision.
Understanding Astigmatism
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea (the front surface of your eye) or the lens inside your eye has an irregular shape. Instead of being perfectly round like a basketball, it’s shaped more like a football. This uneven curvature causes light to focus on multiple points in the eye rather than just one, leading to blurred or distorted vision.
Common Symptoms of Astigmatism
- 👓 Blurred or fuzzy vision at all distances
- 😵 Headaches
- 💡 Eye strain or discomfort, especially after reading or screen use
- 🔄 Difficulty with night vision
What Causes Astigmatism?
Astigmatism can be present at birth, develop after an eye injury, or even result from certain types of eye surgery. It often occurs alongside other vision issues like nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia).
How is Astigmatism Diagnosed?
A comprehensive eye exam at OptoDoc can easily diagnose astigmatism. Using state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Mohammad Mais and the OptoDoc team assess the shape of your eye and measure how your eyes focus light.
How is Astigmatism Treated?
The good news is that astigmatism is very treatable! Options include:
✅ Prescription glasses with special cylindrical lenses
✅ Contact lenses designed for astigmatism (toric lenses)
✅ Refractive surgery for eligible candidates
