What Are Floaters?

Have you ever noticed small, shadowy shapes drifting across your vision? They might look like dots, squiggly lines, or cobwebs that seem to dart away when you try to look directly at them. These are called eye floaters, and while they’re common, they can sometimes be a sign that your eyes need a closer look.

What Causes Floaters?

Floaters are tiny clumps of cells or gel inside the vitreous—the clear, jelly-like substance that fills the inside of your eye. As you age, the vitreous becomes more liquid, causing these clumps to cast shadows on your retina, which you see as floaters. They are more common in people who are nearsighted, have had cataract surgery, or have experienced eye injuries.

When Should You Be Concerned?

While floaters are usually harmless, a sudden increase in floaters—especially if accompanied by flashes of light or vision loss—could indicate a serious condition such as a retinal tear or detachment. This is a medical emergency and needs immediate attention.
