How to Clean Contact Lenses
Proper cleaning and care of your contact lenses is essential for comfortable wear and healthy eyes. At OptoDoc, we want you to enjoy clear vision without risking infection or irritation. Follow this simple routine to keep your lenses—and your eyes—in top shape.
1. Wash Your Hands
Before handling your lenses, wash your hands thoroughly with fragrance-free soap and warm water. Dry your hands with a lint-free towel to avoid transferring debris to your lenses.
2. Prepare Your Lens Case
Always start with a clean case. Rinse it with fresh contact solution (never water), shake out excess, and let it air dry upside down on a clean tissue.
3. Rub and Rinse
Place a lens in the palm of your hand, apply a few drops of multipurpose solution, and gently rub the lens in a circular motion for about 10–15 seconds on each side. This helps remove surface deposits.
After rubbing, rinse both sides of the lens thoroughly with fresh solution to wash away loosened debris.
4. Store Overnight
Place the cleaned lens in its case, fill with fresh solution, and repeat for the other lens. Close the case tightly and leave your lenses to soak overnight (or at least 4–6 hours).
5. Replace Your Solution Daily
Discard used solution each morning. Never top off old solution—always use fresh solution to prevent contamination.
6. Clean Your Case Weekly
Once a week, rinse your case with solution, wipe with a clean tissue, and air dry. Replace your case every 1–3 months to reduce microbial buildup.
7. Follow Your Replacement Schedule
Whether you wear daily, bi-weekly, or monthly disposables, stick to the schedule recommended by your eye care professional. Overwearing lenses increases the risk of complications.
